When Fresno, CA resident, and fast-rising MC talent Fashawn speaks, the world increasingly listens. Since dropping his debut long player ‘Boy Meets World’ in 2009, making XXL Freshman list a year later, and continuing to explode the game with a string of mix-tape releases and guest appearances, including his famed Grizzly City and Illmatic revisited projects, the hip-hop planet is quickly becoming Fash’s playground.
Due to continue his seemingly unstoppable rise with new long-player ‘The Ecology’, and smashing Rock The Bells summer sessions alongside fellow west coast luminaries Blu and Exile, Fashawn is simply one of those MCs whose wordplay, intelligence, realness and sheer passion for the music he creates and is part of, makes you sit up and take notice. The B-boy may have been introduced to the world, but now the man is looking to take that world over, one rhyme at a time. So we reached out for a firm handshake and made some polite introductions of our own, asking Fashawn to introduce himself to The Twelve. The pleasure is all ours.
1. Who's in the house?
Santiago The Real. Properly know as Fashawn. I have many names
2. Can it be that it was all so simple then?
It's pretty simple now as well. Maybe even more simple. Artists are really dumbing- down their music these days.
It seems to be working for them though.
3. It ain't where you're from, it's...?
It ain't where you’re from it's where your at. I'm currently out West working on my sophomore LP titled The Ecology.
Just got back from touring Europe with the legendary Rakim. Feels good to be home.
4. Give me the fortune, keep the fame?
Fame and fortune are two interesting concepts. Both very different from one another if you really think about it.
I just want to be successful like Drake said. (Laughs).
5. After the show it's the after-party, and after the party it's the...?
"The hotel lobby and after the Belvedere it's probably Cris..." One of my favorite songs growing up.
I might have been eleven or twelve years old when that came out. Didn't have a clue what Jigga was talking about
at that time in my life.
6. It's quite okay for a gangster to wear sandals?
I actually prefer house shoes. The corduroy ones to be specific. Unless I'm at the beach. Being caught in the streets
wearing sandals isn't the wisest move where I'm from.
7. If I ruled the world?
I'd pay Banksy or Blu to paint murals all over the White House. I'd put extreme sports in the school system next to
all the other sports. I've thought about this a few times in my life.
8. Do you want more?
I just want what's mine. I ain't asking for much. Other than that I'll take everything.
9. How does it feel?
It feels like I'm barely getting started.
10. What's next on the menu?
I'll be working restlessly on my forthcoming album and touring around the U.S and Europe later this year.
I'm preparing for Rock The Bells as we speak with Blu and Exile. I'm ecstatic about being on the same bill as
Lauryn Hill and Nas. I have a lot in store for the remainder of 2011.
11. Give me the reason to want you back?
I always tell the truth, even when I lie.
12. Tell us why it's all love...
Cause I love what I do and I do what I love.
