Photography is an amazing art form, and photographers an interesting breed. They snap away, at people, places, scenes, capturing life and life’s moments, sometimes by design sometimes not. We’re lucky to know some pretty good ones here on Fairfax, and there is no doubt that their own documenting of this area and its people will be an important record of an important cultural time before long. They already are in many ways.
And the same was true of LA artist Michael Miller. He was present through the west coast’s first golden age of rap and his coffee table book ‘West Coast Hip-Hop: A History in Pictures’ is a vital document of that period of musical growth and brilliance. It is also just a book full of amazing pictures of some of the greats. Images from the book were on display at Known on Fairfax last weekend, and for all music lovers it was a must see. Everyone from Tha Alkaholiks, Ice Cube, Eazy E, N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, Too Short, House of Pain, DJ Quik, Dr. Dre, and even Tupac Shakur and his Thug Life crew are in there, and the photos are fantastic. Get your slice of history where you can. And to those that do it, please keep snapping.
