We’re not sure where it will lead, we’re not even sure how to describe it or whether we’ll like it. But there is no doubt that
we are intrigued and increasingly excited about the new project from the legendary De La Soul.
Well partly De La, because First Serve is a concept group leading a concept project featuring Plug 1 and Plug 2 (aka Posdnous and Trugoy), a mixture of musical styles, animated promos, made-up characters and online innovation. All that exists at the moment is a part animation, part live action trailer called ‘Mrs. Whitter’, a sparse but potentially hilarious Twitter feed (@poplivin), a brilliant Tumblr presence, a fantastic new track called ‘Pushin Aside, Pushin Along’, and a mixtape called ‘The Goon Time’.
The album drops on 2 April, and is reported to be based around two Queens MCs trying to break into the rap game, and is a celebration of musical styles including old school hip hop, disco and funk. The existing music is great, and it is good to hear new De La sounds (even if not a full group project). You have to take your hat off to them, innovators from the very beginning. First Serve is worth it just for the visuals, but the music could be inspired. Serve it up, fresh.
