We were delighted to feature Masta Ace on this week’s Namesake playlist. Because Ace is a rapper who is criminally overlooked as a true legend of the game, despite his long and impressive career, featuring numerous classic cuts and albums.
From his Cold Chillin’ output and Marley Marl/Juice Crew collaborations, as well as ‘Slaughtahouse’ and ‘Sittin’ on Chrome’ as Masta Ace Inc, there are the brilliant solo albums ‘Disposable Arts’ and ‘A Long Hot Summer’. These latter pieces are brilliant concept albums, underpinned by tight lyrics and flow that you would expect from the Ace, yet are relatively little commented on outside of purist scenes. Then there is his eMC side project ‘The Show’ alongside Strickland, Wordsworth and Punchline, an underground supergroup of sorts, and more recently the team up with fellow old schooler Ed OG ‘A&E’.
But perhaps most exciting is the fact that he is still grinding, and 2012 will ee a team up with another favourite MF DOOM for the fascinating ‘MA DOOM: Son of Yvonne’. So Masta Ace has not retired. Like a great champ he has picked up his training, assessed his options, and come back fit and strong for new challenges. Welcome back Ace, but then you never really went away.
