It’s often the case that our favorite DJs introduce us to great music that we are yet to discover. That’s their job. But in the case of Twelve Bar fam, DJ Evil One, this was taken literally when he introduced us to dance-pop sensation Anjulie, for whom he is currently spinning as Tour DJ. Hailing from the Toronto suburbs, but boasting Guyanese, and by extension Indian heritage, multi-instrumentalist and singer Anjulie provides music with a powerful pop aesthetic. But all somehow tinged with her personal influences, ranging from Afro-Caribbean calypso, reggae, and South American Latin music, to the pop, hip-hop and rock that emanated from her suburban radio.
The result is a sophisticated blend of pop sensibility, hip-hop edginess, dance-floor savvy and world-music spice, all topped with Anjulie's sultry vocal stylings. She's a sassy electro-tinged pop diva with plenty to say and heavy tunes to back it up. Recent single ‘Brand New Bitch’ and latest ‘Stand Behind The Music’ say it all really - brand new, attitude-laden, and is genuinely something to get behind. Music with a message. We threw The Twelve her way, and asked her to stand behind the answers also.
