If you have heard any hip-hop coming out of Portland, OR, over the past few years then you will undoubtedly be familiar with the work of producer Stewart Villain. Aged only 21, Villain has established himself as one of the go-to beat-makers for the cream of the Pacific North-West’s lyricists. With clear inspirations from his home city as well as legendary names such as 9th Wonder, Flying Lotus, and The Justus League, Villain’s music has a raw, artistic sound only really found in the northwest. He has produced for a range of established as well as legendary local artists, such as Keak Da Sneak, The Jacka, Rydah J Clyde, Vast Aire (of Cannibal Ox), Stunnaman (of The Pack), YuckMouth, Jdiggs, TOPE and Jackie Chain. However, his work is not only limited to artist collaborations, with Villain also letting his creativity flow with his diverse and sought after beat tapes.
You know from our work with the FRSH SLCTS family and various Portland music heads that we take Portland seriously when it comes to beats and rhymes. So we were grateful for the Villain’s time, as we stole away his responses to The Twelve. Swag, indeed.
1. Who’s in the house?
Stewart Villain and the Arcade Clubbers… Kinda Like the Kitchen and The Blinds, lol!
2. Can it be that it was so simple then?
Back in the day? Yeah, all I did was Skateboard and play video games. Remember ‘Power Stone’ for Sega Dreamcast? That was my joint...haha!
3. It ain’t where you’re from it’s…?
How you make it happen… I’m a kid from a small town just outside of Portland, OR, and I’ve been able to reach out to people around the world with my music.
4. Give me the fortune, keep the fame?
I’d honestly rather be broke and have people know about my music, than be rich as hell and no one know what I do.
5. After the show it’s the after party, and after the party it’s the…?
Back to my house… At that point of the night I’m probably gonna be throwed!
6. It’s quite okay for a gangster to wear sandals?
Kanye made it ok. I don’t wear sandals…But hey, to each his own.
7. If I ruled the world?
I know it sounds clichéd but I’d have to end all this madness going on in the world… It’s getting BAD. Open your eyes.
8. Do you want more?
More of what? There’s a lot of things I would like to have more of, lol. If I could have more anything it would be time. I’m not sure what to think about this whole 2012 deal...I only have a year to get on, LOL!
9. How does it feel?
To be a Villain?? It’s actually not as bad as people make it out to be, lol.
10. What’s next on the menu?
I’ve got a tonne of placements that I’m really looking forward to. Hopefully I’ll be able to garner some kind of buzz from them.
11. Give me the reason to want you back?
I get it in! Work hard, just to work harder!
12. Tell us why it’s all love…
Cos that’s what I try to spread. Come to my city and you’ll see why… 75% of the artists from here probably have a beat from me, lol!
