Rewind and come again my selecter! Such is the cry that has been common from Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, Queens when the man with the magical touch on the turntables pulls out a tune that demands a reload. You wouldn’t necessarily find a DJ playing all of the tunes that we have put together for our ‘Selecter’ playlist, such is the breadth of styles they cover, but we have taken inspiration from their practice by attempting to choose songs which, no matter when you hear them, have to be set on immediate repeat. And in doing so have gone way back in the vaults to make our selections.
This is why you’ll find the finest bluesman of all time (in our humble opinion) Muddy Waters and his classic ‘Got My Mojo Working’ sitting alongside Pharrell’s own ode to his mojo, the mighty ‘Frontin’’. Wayne Smith created the first ever electronically produced dancehall riddim with his ‘Sleng Teng’ beat, and if we are going to reference the selecters of Jamaica then surely this is the tune to start with, sitting pretty alongside Outkast’s simply outstanding ‘Spottieottiedopaliscious’, itself tinged with a touch of the island’s reggae rhythms. We even took it back to the fringes of the rave scene, with Joyce Simm’s under-appreciated ‘All and All’ a song that is guaranteed to ring out the freestylers, while Warren G’s ‘This DJ’ simply felt like an appropriate choice given the nod to the musical selecter throughout.
Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg, so dive into the ‘Selecter’ playlist, and let us know your own choices for reload.
