It may seem that we were being slightly lazy this week with our Playlist naming, plumping for The Unknown as an easy way of grouping together our selection. But rather than it being simply because we couldn’t think of anything cleverer, in fact the idea was to try to bump some tunes that are all slightly spiritual and other-worldly. Tunes that suggest or muse a little bit on the great unknown, whether spiritually or simply suggesting stuff we don’t know or can’t see.
This is the reason why Tribe’s Q-Tip solo joint ‘Verses From The Abstract’ is on there, hinting at the abstract thoughts of this most poetic of rhymers, alongside Erykah Badu’s ‘Didn’t Cha Know’, her own soulful mystical musings as only Badu can do. We’ve also pulled out a couple of lo-fi chilling classics from the vaults, including Zero 7’s blissful ‘Destiny’ and 4hero’s ‘Spirits in Transit’, two examples of the electronic brilliance that London town has regularly produced.
The theme is loose, we grant you, but as with all of our playlists the true thing that unites the songs is quality, and that other great unknown in the musical process, inspiration. So sit back, let your mind wander to the outer reaches, and most of all just enjoy.
