To coincide with the Rise Of The DEST shows in LA and beyond, we’ve pretty much been taken over by the Overdoz crew, ransacked, pillaged, bear-hugged and totally DESTed. And as part of this forced occupation you’ll already know that the crew have hijacked our weekly playlist and dusted it with DEST, in the process bringing us an insight into the musical minds of the four man rap collective, their influences, and just some of their favorite tunes. We’ve liked it so much we are keeping it on rotation for one more week, as LA’s basks in the glow of their sellout show last week which pretty much ranks as the show of the year.
And hints of all of their playlist choices were in evidence in their show, picking the best of their back catalogue with a heavy dose of the brilliant ‘Live For, Die For’ LP. So you could see the influence of Andre 3000’s awesome ‘She Lives In My Lap’ in Kent’s own proto-Prince croon, whilst Mausberg’s ‘Mushrooms’ mixed with hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)’ simply overlaid the entire tripped out theme. Hints of ODB’s ‘Rawhide’, a mammoth posse cut of demented fervor, intertwined with the classic west coast feel of Mac Dre’s ‘California Bear’, while the soul of Goapele’s ‘Closer (To My Dreams)’ and Tony Toni Tone’s ‘All I Ask Of You’ were also evident across the board.
And so just like our recently launched collab tee, the result is a list that glows as brightly as a million blunts, and will blow your mind in just the same way. This is the age of the Overdoz takeover, a journey to inner and outer space via Blunnitville sound-tracked by the haziest, tightest, blissed out beats and dopest rhymes imaginable. Put on your seatbelts, it’s time for the Rise of the DEST.
