If ever there was an appropriate name for a nightclub, the Limelight was it. The club started life in Florida, relocated to Atlanta and then, under the guidance of its founder, Peter Gatien, expanded to Chicago, New York and London.
Where it really earned its reputation though was in New York where, in the early 1980s, it provided a home not only for the growing disco and punk scene and later on for techno, goth and house music but also as the epicenter of the developing drug culture that went hand in hand with the nightlife world.
If you’re not familiar with how everything unfolded, we won’t spoil it for you here. What we will do is recommend you go and see the brand new documentary entitled ‘Limelight’ which documents the colorful history of the clubs, the characters who passed through them and, most importantly, the music that was birthed in their four walls as it’s an epic story. It’s also produced by Gatien’s very own daughter so the perspective is an extremely personal and intimate one.
