You know that your brand is really something special when the brand name itself becomes the widely recognized way to identify an item of clothing. And so it is with the iconic British clothing manufacturer J.Barbour & Sons Ltd whose name is synonymous with waxed jackets, instantly stylish, incredibly tailored and iconic.
So it is fitting in a way that Barbour teamed up with another iconic name that is synonymous with style and cool, through their Steve McQueen collection. We know that this collaboration, created to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Barbour’s International Motorcycle Jacket, has been around for a few months, but we got a chance to see it close-up for the first time on a recent trip to New York, and it really is an incredible capsule collection.
The fact that the collaboration itself is not related to the celebrity, but to the jacket primarily, is indication enough of the status of Barbour design. But it is the natural fit of these two icons that serves so well with the garments themselves, from jackets to knitwear to button-downs, every piece is classic. McQueen and the USA team wore Barbour when they competed in the International Six Day Trials (ISDT) in 1964, and from there on the relationship between the two was cemented. McQueen chose Barbour because of its practical qualities, but wouldn’t have minded the style element one bit.
McQueen once said that “Racing is life, everything before or after is just waiting”. It’s that yearning for life in the moment, and the thrill of the fast lane that we really admire about him. Often to be found racing his bike around the roads and deserts of California, we like to think that, like Barbour, we’ve also got a little of his attitude in what we do. It’s all waxed love.
