Robert Raimon Roy, aka Rob Roy, aka Le Tigre Blanc, aka that guy who set the music world alight with 2008’s music and video innovation explosion that was ‘Fur In My Cap’, is an intriguing character. A true artist in ever sense of the word, Roy is more intent on stretching the boundaries of musical genres, if not ripping them apart completely, than he is serving within the tramlines. Such an aesthetic approach to his music and visual interpretations thereof has led to a quite startling body of work.
And having locked himself away from the world with nothing but a library card, production desk, notepad and a grocer’s tab of good food, Robert Raimon Roy is now emerging from the twilight with a record that once more threatens to explode all myths about what hip-hop and r’n’b can be in 2011 and beyond. ‘Le Tigre Blanc’, with its mix of syncopated electric funk, r’n’b slink soul and chopped up rap notes, is that record This guy rides a wave to the left, while others break right, and treats his musical exploration as a duty in a world obsessed with collaborations, co-signs and faddish rush releases. Show us a new direction he says, and if early release ‘Little Egypt Wavy’ is anything to go by, music fans are in for a treat.
A Twelve Bar favorite, we asked Rob to slide a bookmark in for a moment and get literary with The Twelve instead. He didn’t fire any (tigre) blancs.
