Twelve Bar Playlists

01. Jhelisa – Friendly Pressure
Unsure whether this is soul, r’n’b, acid jazz, or mellow house. One thing we are sure of though is that this 1994 release is an absolute classic, top of many people’s best of lists.

02. Outkast – Movin’ Cool (The After Party)
Dungeon Family member Joi gets together with Andre 3000 for this mellow cut, slipped into ‘Idlewild’. Further evidence that Andre 3000 has hardly ever stepped out of greatness.

03. United Future Organization – Friends…We’ll Be
Tadashi Yabe and Raphael Sebbag in their UFO guise drop more nu-jazz brilliance. Always worth a listen my friends.

04. Madeline Bell – That’s What Friends Are For
Blue Mink member and gospel legend Madeline Bell also dropped some rare groove classics, including this Latin-tinged beauty from 1976’s ‘This Is One Girl’ LP.

05. Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder – Just Good Friends

Every track from ‘Bad’ was released as a single, except this one. Shame as it is our favorite. I mean who couldn’t love an MJ/Stevie collab like this. Synth madness from Wonder.

06. Prince – If I Was Your Girlfriend
Gender-bending tale of challenged intimacy from the purple one. Seriously, does anyone come more correct than Prince. Just an incredible record.

07. TLC – Sumthin’ Wicked This Way Comes
The groove from TLC’s ‘CrazySexyCool’ is priceless, but it is the inclusion of Andre 3000 on this politically charged lament that defines it as a classic.

08. Jody Whatley Feat. Rakim – Friends
Jody Whatley doesn’t get the props she deserved as a pioneer of female pop, r’n’b and electronica. She was also one of the first to combine female vocals with a rap guest, picking the God himself, another example of pioneering brilliance.

09. Ice Cube – Man’s Best Friend
Sampling Parliament’s ‘Flash Light’, Cube drops Spuds McKenzie in favor of his trust gat. Not a step out of line on classic ‘Death Certificate’ from one of the finest MCs ever.

10. The Friends of Distinction – Going In Circles
Isaac Hayes perhaps owned this with his ‘Black Moses’ version, but the original from LA’s Friends is a template of melodic soul beauty.

11. Stephanie Cooke – Here With My Best Friend

Stephanie Cooke has released some soulful house classics on King Street, and never more than this beautiful groove from 2001.

12. Joe Cocker – With A Little Help From My Friends
McCartney with a little help from Lennon composed this ditty, Joe Cocker, with a little help from his Woodstock performance, made it a rock-soul classic.

Good music is the driving force behind everything we do here at Twelve Bar.

That’s why we’ve been digging through the Twelve Bar vaults to pull out our favorite tunes for your browsing and
listening pleasure, and keeping our ears to the ground for what is fresh now and in the future. And then we’re putting
them altogether into a delicious musical gumbo and serving you a fresh bowlful of twelve select tracks every week.
